I’ve moved my blog over to Here so if you’ve enjoyed my previous posts, head over there for all my new stuff!
So I played the Mirror’s Edge demo on the Xbox 360 the other day and it’s pretty great. I’d like to start by saying that every Spiderman game ever made should just look at how this game works and realize they fail at life. At least from what I’ve seen of them, most have a lot of fighting on the street and not so much roof hopping or web slinging. Anyway, so the Mirror’s Edge demo starts out with some roof hopping training with you playing as Faith (the Asian girl who’s the main character) and you follow around another girl called Celeste. You and Celeste are both runners who run around avoiding the cops and deliver packages to different parts of the city. I’m pretty sure the packages are of a serious nature seeing as how in the end of the demo cops are chasing you and trying to gun you down. Also, I’m not sure whether you’re stealing these packages are merely delivering them from secret agency to secret agency.
The basic controls of the game are pretty strange compared to normal controls but it makes sense as you get into the game. For instance, to jump you push the Left Bumper vs. the usual A button but it works well when you want to use the Left Trigger to crouch down in order to roll or slide under beams when you land. The Left Stick controls which direction you run and you use the Right Stick later on to balance when you’re walking across beams. I kinda suck at the balancing part seeing as how I died like 3 times each time it came to that (By the way if you don’t like the sounds of someone falling to their death, you might not want to play this game. You make a lovely squish/crunching noise when you hit the ground haha). A lot of the action involves running and jumping of course but it’s not all straight forward. You can run straight at a wall in order to run on the wall, which lets you get a better angle to jump up higher (that and it’s really cool to run on walls, I mean come on who wouldn’t want to do that?). You can also shimmy up polls and slide down ziplines by jumping onto them.
This game isn’t all running away and no action though. In the demo cops start shooting at you for no reason, which makes you wonder what your job is really about. Anyway, when the cops (or anyone shooting at you) show up you can disarm them by hitting your Y button and steal their gun. You have to hit Y at just the right time though, otherwise you fail to steal it from them. If you really suck at disarming people you can slow down time for a few seconds (and go all Matrix style on people) using the X button. This is really cool and I’m kind of wondering whether or not it will be unlimited in the final version of the game or whether it needs to be charged up. It seems like it’d be a little overpowered if you could use it whenever you wanted.
Anyway this game is really fun and you should definitely try to play the demo if you can. It seems like it will have a lot of playability as long as the levels don’t get ridiculously complex and annoying.
Ok so on Tuesday the new patch (called the “Echoes of Doom”) preparing for the Wrath of the Lich King came out. It was huge! The login screen looks amazing now (especially if you loved that skeleton dragon from the trailer that I was so excited about). There’s an amazing looking ice castle in the background and a really cool bridge covered in big curvey spikes. The cool skeleton dragon comes flying from the back near the castle and flies overhead shortly before coming to land to the right of the login boxes. Cool things that came along with the fun new dragon login screen include the new Inscription Profession, new haircuts available for a small amount of gold, and loads of new spells and talent trees. You can check out Wowhead’s section about the Inscription profession here and see all the amazing goodness that comes with it (this should somewhat explain why the prices are jacked up insanely for herbs right now 😀 ).
Along with the new Inscription profession came a few new abilities for the gathering professions. Herbalists now get the move Lifeblood, which lets the user heal itself by clicking it when you’re around earthy things (fun flowers shoot up from the ground to heal you). Also, if you wondered what the benefit of pounding away all day at ore nodes was, then here’s a new spell for you. It’s called Toughness and the final rank increases your maximum health by 500. That’s not bad at all 😀 . There’s also a fun new spell for skinners called Master of Anatomy which ultimately increases your critical strike rating by 25. I especially love it’s explanation for why it does this. “Skinning all those dead animals has broadened your anatomical knowledge, increasing your critical strike rating by 25,” lol 😀 .
As far as new spells go, I can only vouch for Locks, Mages, and Pallys for the moment seeing as how I haven’t tweaked with the other classes. Locks have a new spell down the demonology tree that’s called Metamorphosis that lets you turn into a demon. Finally! I’ve been saying they should give Locks a demon form that lets them fly similar to how druids can change into a bird, (that and let priests grow angel wings that let them fly) since flying mounts were created. You can’t fly with this demon form but it’s still cool anyways. This spell is pretty awesome seeing as how just one of the things it does in its final version is increase your armor by 600%.
As for Mages, they have a hilarious new fire spell at the bottom of their talent tree. It’s called Living Bomb and it’s very similar to Seed of Corruption. Basically the targeted person ends up taking a lot of fire damage and eventually exploding *KABOOM* causing fire damage to all enemies with 10 yards of themselves lol. The only bad thing is that you can’t use it on more than one person at the same time 😉 .
Paladins everywhere will be confused by the addition of 2 more Judgements to their list of spells but hopefully will learn to love it like I do. These additional spells let the Pally keep up their blessings for about 2 mins and then they can choose whether to heal themselves, slow the attacker and prevent them from running or regain mana by using each different Judgement. I’m betting Pallys will be nerfed in a few days though because they seem overpowered even when you’re playing with one. There is an amazing new spell down the Protection tree called Hammer of Righteousness that let’s you “Hammer the current target and up to 2 additional nearby targets, causing 3 times your main hand damage per second as Holy damage.” It’s freaking amazing 😀 . Also, if you haven’t checked out the new Death Knight talent trees you really should.
Yesterday Blizzard announced that the Wrath of the Lich king is coming out November 13, 2008. I can’t believe it’s actually coming out this year after how much the Burning Crusade was drawn out. I thought it wasn’t true when I first saw the news on a Digg article. It seems like Blizzard has been getting its butt in gear for the Christmas season though (no doubt hoping for huge sales as X-mas pressies). I do wish they would’ve bumped it to the beginning of December so I wouldn’t have to worry at all about classes, but no it’s got to come out a month before I’m finished. Oh well at least I’m done the 11th. I feel sorry for those saps that go until the 18th haha. This gives me something good to look forward to in terms of things coming out near Christmas seeing as how Harry Potter got bumped forward 😦 .
I wish it cost less than $39.99 for the normal edition too, but it’s still cool to have it coming out this early. The collector’s edition is of course more expensive at $69.99. I’m not going to shell out that kinda cash for the expansion but for those of you that want to go ahead. It contains an art book, behind the scenes dvd, a soundtrack, an exclusive in-game pet, 2 starter decks for the WoW card set March of the Legion which include 2 exclusive cards (only available in the collector’s edition) and a mousepad featuring the continent of Northrend.
I’ve already mentioned some of the game’s new features. The biggest of the news is probably the new Death Knight class which I’ve already mentioned. Now there’s also going to be a non-inventory space to keep your vanity pets and mounts (basically you get to learn these items instead) which makes the Locks and the Pallys not have an advantage from casting their mounts anymore. The same thing goes for PvP and raiding tokens which makes me want to ask Blizzard why it took them so long. There’s also going to be a Battleground that’s not instanced (so that should be a “fun” place to hang out lol 🙂 ). Hopefully it’s in Northrend so nooblets don’t have to worry about being constantly ganked by players in transit. Also, people’s addons will be slightly cut because of the built-in threat meter. This should be helpful to people oblivious of such things.
There’s going to be new instances as well as a fixed-up version of Naxxramas designed for 10 and 25 people. I think that’s really cool since I never got to go to Naxx (that and the fact that it sucks to get more than 25 people to raid anything). I’m excited about having another undead/winter zone too. I also hope that getting exalted with the Netherwing will lead to getting one of those icey dragons as a mount 😀 . One of the bad things is no new playable races. There will be lots of new NPC races that you can talk to though, so I guess that’s something. Enough of my rambling, there is a lot more that’s being added that I didn’t mention so go look and drool at it 😛 .
So today was the day that Spore was supposed to be available to Australia but the stores there started selling it on Monday. Boo I say! We don’t get to see Spore until Sunday and they’ve already been playing for 3 days. Also, Europe and Japan are supposed to get the game tomorrow. I really hope my power supply gets back before Sunday, but knowing my luck it won’t. Either that or something else will be broken in my computer 😦 .
From what I’ve read, Spore has been receiving good reviews, but not as good as expected. I guess that sometimes happens when things get a little too much hype. I’ve also heard that the built-in creatures are a lot less exciting than user-created ones. This isn’t a shocker since people have been buying up the Creature Creator since it became available. I’m really excited for the cell stage though because I’ve played a simple flash version of it already. The flash game was addicting enough. It was fun just to see your cell grow longer and gain more body parts as you ate things. I’ll probably write about it once I get to play the full version. Can’t wait until Sunday!
[Edit: Here’s the amazing flash game I was talking about and here’s a pretty cool flash version of the DS Spore Creature Creator.]
Omg I just finally watched the Wrath of the Lich King cinematic trailer and it’s so shiny. The undead dragon is so amazingly cool. Don’t believe, me watch it yourself. I wish the World of Warcraft movie would look like that. Their cinematics are always so great. I’m hoping this expansion is really really good and that it comes out when I can take a few days and just play it. I didn’t get a chance to jump straight into The Burning Crusade because of school and that really sucked.
Anyways if you don’t know some of the new features that the new expansion is gonna have. Here are a few.
Death Knight – World of Warcraft’s first Hero class (complete with all the necromancer powers you could ever want yay.)
You get to level to level 80 this time.
New Inscription profession (That sounds like some fun but probably is gonna be similar to enchanting. Hopefully it doesn’t count as a green effect on the weapon though so you can have both enchants and inscriptions without them overriding each other.)
The new continent of Northrend (Yay I always love new places to explore 😀 .)
New customization options (They’d better let you change your old characters faces/voices-if that’s an option. I’ve always wondered why they didn’t have a few presets you could pick for each gender of each race. They should just make it like respeccing, where you have to pay money each time and the cost gradually degrades with time.)
These are just a few of the new things coming so check out the Wrath of the Lich King site if you want more.
As the post says the FFxiii demo is coming out soon (I guess March 2009 is kinda soon…) and it’s supposed to be quite chunky demowise (and exclusively on the PS3 *sniffle* 😦 ). It’s bundled with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, which the demo itself is supposed to be longer than. The original Advent Children was 101 minutes long so since it’s the director’s cut it should be close to 2 hours long or longer. That’s very cool seeing as how you can probably get into a decent chunk of storyline in that time because the demo is based off of the opening segment of the game. But seeing as how the demo isn’t coming out until March, we have awhile to wait for the actual game 😦 .
There was some more stuff revealed along with the demo in Famitsu’s 3 page article. Apparently the unknown female sidekick has gone through some tough times in the past. Well I guess I shouldn’t say sidekick though seeing as how each character in the game is a protagonist instead of just having a main and supporting characters. The man with the shotgun who was originally nicknamed “Mr. 33CM” also has a name based off of weather. Maybe it’s thunder or rain or hurricane or something. I’m betting on rain. The gameplay is going to be like most Final Fantasy games in the fact that it’s a party battle system where each player takes a turn to fight. Oh also, the Advent Children Complete movie will be on a separate disc than the demo.
That’s all for the news on FFxiii for now but let’s hope some more gets leaked out really soon 😀 .
I’ve been playing with the spore creature creator and it’s really really entertaining. I mean you get a free trial to mess around and create things before the game comes out that you can use later. It’s a really great idea if you ask me :). I made a few creatures myself to play with and yes there are only a limited supply of starting parts but it’s free so deal with it! I wouldn’t shell out the $10 beforehand anyways. What’s the point if you just pay for it later and you can’t use the critters until then?
If you haven’t figured it out from the pictures, once you make them you can do a test drive of them. Run them around, make them angry, sad, scared, or just dance. The game is expected to come out September 7, 2008 but who knows if it will get pushed back more. I have high hopes for this game to be just as addicting if not more than Sims. But I highly recommend the free trial if you haven’t played with it yet.
For a closer look at these guys you can go to the Sporepedia to see mine or other peoples creations. Careful there maybe adult content spore critters lol ;).
So I decided to take a deeper look into the characters of the new Final Fantasy game to see if I could figure out their names yet. I’ve failed so far at finding any names for the supporting 2 characters but I have found some info about them.
Name: Codename Lightning (Real name unknown)
Fight Style: She has buttons on her index finger and thumb that allow her to control gravity. This enables her to flip through the air without a second thought. I think it’s really cool that finally someone has a reason for being able to use “matrix-like” abilities.
Background: Apparently she has some sort of amnesia but may have been a past soldier due to the 2 yellow marks on her shoulder symbolizing her rank.
Pet: She seems to have a scary little machine bird/badger from the video.
Background: She seems to be a forest person because that’s where she is in the video when her badger friend comes out of a magical golden disc from space (Seem familiar Beast Wars fans?). The fact that her main weapon is a bow also goes along with this theory.
Background: There’s not a lot known about this character so maybe he’s meant to be mysterious similar to Auron from Final Fantasy X. Toriyama said something about his relationship with Lightning being complicated so to me that could mean love interest, rival or just maybe a friend.
Story: In Final Fantasy there’s a space colony called Cocoon which is home to millions of people. Also, there is a place called Pulse located outside Cocoon that the residents of Cocoon are afraid of. They also believe that anyone from Pulse is part of a plot to invade Cocoon. Wow paranoid. There are crystals that protect Cocoon that may be similar to the auracite of the Final Fantasy Revenant Wings ds game. These crystals allow the people to summon machines(possibly like machina from X) and creatures(maybe like the espers in Revenant Wings).
I’d just like to comment that I love the 2nd girls pigtails. Super cute lol. I really want that gunblade as well. Also I think the guy will be like Auron in thinking that he’s a total badass without a need for anyone’s help but his own.
Edit: Before I forget look at this amazing video!
I’m really excited about Final Fantasy 13 coming out. It’s written/directed by the same people that made the ds game (Revenant Wings) and Final Fantasy X. Also, the main character is a girl without all the backup characters being girls as well. The main character’s name is lightning. She’s apparently supposed to be a character similar to Cloud.
Oh also, I almost forgot that this game isn’t PS3 exclusive. Yay! I don’t know anyone I could mooch off of for their PS3 so this makes it even more awesome.
Edit: I just realized my comment about lightning being similar to cloud and it made me lol :).
